Irrémédiablement associée à des désirs d’un autre monde, l’utopie tend par sa nature vers des représentations irréalisables. Tour à tour lieu autre ou espace clos, elle peut nous surprendre au détour d’un chemin présent, tout comme elle peut nous entraîner vers un avenir tel qu’il aurait dû être. A la veille du centenaire de la création de la République irlandaise, le colloque présent se donne comme objectif de traquer le désir utopique dans l’Irlande contemporaine. Nous nous pencherons sur les domaines culturels et politiques afin de cerner les espaces où réside l’utopisme en Irlande. Nous explorerons l’Histoire de cet espace insulaire afin de dénicher des réponses à ce désir d’alternances. Le colloque vise à faire ressortir des aires du quotidien – films, récits, expériences, pratique politique – l’espoir renouvelé d’une Irlande toujours en devenir.

Irredeemably bound up with a longing for other worlds, Utopia has a natural inclination towards unrealizable representations. It is in turn another place and a contained space; it might as soon spring forth from the present as drag you along into the future as it should have been. On the eve of the centenary of the birth of the Irish Republic, the present conference will endeavour to hunt out the Utopian impulse in contemporary Ireland, seeking it out in the political and the cultural, focusing on the spaces in which Utopianism has now taken hold. An exploration of the history of the Irish insular space will enable us to find answers to this yearning for alternatives. The conference aims at sifting through everyday cultural practices – film, narratives, life experiences, politics – to highlight renewed hopes for an ever-evolving Ireland.
